El nombre de Priego en una moneda almohade

A huge hoard of Almohad silver coins was found in Priego de Cordoba (Spain) some decades ago and is now kept in the Archeological Museum of Cordoba. Among its thousands of pieces there is one, a half dirham, which bears the name of Priego as minting place. After some considerations on the relevance of Priego during the Almohad period, we conclude with a linguistic analysis of the Arabic writing of the name. Our conclusion is that the alternative spellings for Priego reflect the difficulties to reproduce the pre-Arabic name "Pego"

Entre los millares de monedas de plata contenidas en el tesorillo almohade que se halló en Priego de Córdoba hace ya más de medio siglo y se conserva en el Museo Arqueológico y Etnológico de Córdoba, hay una pieza, medio dírham, donde puede leerse, en el lugar correspondiente a la ceca, el epígrafe correspondiente a la notación árabe del nombre de Priego. Después de ciertas consideraciones acerca de la historia de la ciudad en época almohade, discutimos a qué se debe la variación de grafías del topónimo, y llegamos a la conclusión de que el hecho refleja los intentos por fijar en árabe un topónimo previo: "Pego"
