"O inimigo, como os chamamo...
We are going to deal with an emblematic aspect of the end of the Second World War: the polemic arisen among the british society for their government's intervention in the greek civil war. During a specific episode of the war, the Dekemvriana (December, 1944), the government's politics were heavly criticized by the british press which considered the greek left wing guerrillas - that were fighting against the London supported hellenic monarchy - as a legitimate popular movement. Different opinions can be found in a compilation of letters written by british soldiers in Greece, which prime minister Winston Churchill distributed among his War Cabinet's colleagues. We analyzed thoes letters in order to comprehend how some soldiers disagreed with the journalistic coverage of the greek war. Our sources indicate that there were, among the soldiers, the idea that their government's actions in Greece were correct, and that the press distortet the facts when it portrayed as heroes a guerrilla movement considered by the soldiers as violent, anarchic and authoritarian. We hope this paper casts some light on the complex debates on one of the most important moments of the declining world power of Britain
Trataremos um aspecto emblemático do fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial: a intervenção britânica na guerra civil grega e as controvérsias geradas na sociedade britânica. Durante um episódio específico desse processo, a Dekemvriana (dezembro de 1944), a imprensa britânica fez oposição à política do governo, considerando a guerrilha comunista grega - que lutava contra a monarquia helena apoiada por Londres - um legítimo movimento popular. Encontramos percepções diferentes em cartas escritas por soldados britânicos então presentes na Grécia, compiladas e distribuídas pelo primeiro-ministro Churchill para seus colegas do Gabinete de Guerra. Analisamos essa seleção de excertos de correspondência para compreender como alguns soldados se colocavam contrários à cobertura jornalística da época e qual era a percepção acerca da política de seu governo e dos guerrilheiros que combatiam. A documentação analisada indica que existia, entre os militares britânicos, a ideia de que as ações de seu governo na Grécia eram, de modo geral, corretas e que a imprensa distorcia os fatos ao retratar de forma heroica um movimento de guerrilha considerado por eles como um bando anárquico, sanguinário e ditatorial. Esperamos, com este trabalho, lançar alguma luz sobre os complexos debates acerca de um dos momentos mais importantes do declínio do poder global britânico
