"Opening the Doors of an Unexplored World": Pioneering the Translation of Skaldic Poetry in Spanish

Este artículo contribuye al creciente interés en la investigación del papel de larecepción de las traducciones de literatura nórdica medieval en la época postmedieval.Nuestro análisis se centra en la traducción de Enrique Bernárdez de la poesía escáldica deEgils saga Skalla-Grímssonar como lugar de intercambio cultural en el que pueden estudiarselas relaciones de poder entre las culturas de referencia y de partida. Al situar la traducción ensu contexto histórico-cultural mostraremos el modo en el que esta se corresponde tanto losimpulsos europeizantes de la España posfranquista, como con el recuerdo de un pasadoglorioso que va desde la Reconquista hasta la Edad de Oro

This paper contributes to a growing body of research investigating the roleof translations in the post-medieval reception of Old Norse-Icelandic literature. In this casestudy, we analyse Enrique Bernárdez's Spanish translation of the skaldic verse in Egils sagaSkalla-Grímssonar as a site of cultural encounter where the power relations between targetand source cultures can be explored. By situating the translation within its historical-culturalcontext, we show how the translation reflects the trend of Europeanisation in post-FrancoSpain, while simultaneously recalling its glorious past from the Reconquista to the GoldenAge
