The origins of the church of the Society of Jesus in Tunja dated four centuries ago, to the beginning of the 17th century, when the temple was start inside a house half a block from the main square, acquired by the Jesuits to stablish their school-novitiate, which grew little by little with many difficulties. The façade of the temple only come out to the street in the middle of the 18th century. After the expulsion of the Jesuits, the dispersion of altars and images of canvas and bulk and the change of uses of the temple began, which would become a convent-hospital and college-university of the republic. In the seventies of the 20th century, an intervention was carried out for tourist purposes that disfigured its spatiality and turned it into a concert hall. In the eighties, a restoration corrected part of the exterior intervention and consolidated the roof of the old church of the Society of Jesus, today used as a temple
Los orígenes de la iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús de Tunja se remontan cuatro siglos atrás, a inicios del siglo XVII, cuando el templo nace en el interior una casa a media cuadra de la plaza mayor, adquirida por los jesuitas para fundar su colegio-noviciado, que fue creciendo poco a poco con muchas dificultades. La fachada solo logra salir a la calle a mediados del siglo XVIII. Tras la expulsión de los jesuitas, inicia la dispersión de los bienes muebles y el cambio de usos del templo, que se convertirá en convento-hospital y colegio-universidad republicano. En los años setenta del siglo XX se produce una intervención con fines turísticos que desfiguró su espacialidad y la convirtió en sala de conciertos. En los años ochenta, una restauración corrigió parte de la intervención exterior y consolidó la cubierta de la antigua iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, hoy usada como templo.
