In this article I analyse the content of Edmondo de Amicis' novel 'Love and Gymnastics', published in 1892,whose plot focusses upon the field of Physical Education (PE). First, I argue that it is pertinent to explore this romantic fiction because it describes the problems surrounding PE in Italy (and Europe) during the last third of the nineteenth century. In this sense, I think that the author wrote this and other popular novels (ie, 'Heart') to propose solutions to the problems of his country and to spread a newculture in order to strengthen, after the Italian unification, the sense of collective identity. From this perspective, second, I summarize the dilemmas and messages about PE that the author puts into the mouth of the various characters of the fiction. Those include the following: a) The existence of propagandists of a new body culture, committed to persuade society of the need of PE as a compulsory school subject. b) The crystallization, as a result of such endeavour, of specific legislation and institutions (ie, colleges for the training of PE teachers). c) The recurrent motifs in the justification of the 'reason d'être' of PE. Here, the issue of health and/or degeneration of the race, seen from the perspective of the wealth or the poverty of the nation, has a special relevance. From this point of view, PE has a dual nature: it's both a preventive measure (medicine) and an educational intervention. d) The discourse with which the apostles of the new culture distance themselves from other types of body practices: the scientific nature of PE based on anatomy, physiology, hygiene, pedagogy, history and theory of gymnastics, design of gyms, etc. e) The internal conflicts and disagreements between schools and/or currents of PE. In the fiction, the main characters are divided between the followers of Oberman and those of Bauman,where the 'baumanists'would be the more advanced. f) Finally, this novel can be seen as a declaration in favour of feminine PE: firstly
En este artículo se hace un análisis del contenido de la novela 'Amor y Gimnástica' de Edmundo de Amicis, publicada en 1892, en cuya trama la Educación Física (EF) desempeña un papel decisivo. Justifico, en primer lugar, la pertinencia del estudio de esta ficción romántica porque, de algún modo, describe la problemática en torno a la EF en Italia (y en Europa) durante el último tercio del siglo XIX. En este sentido, considero que el propio autor se sirvió intencionalmente de ésta y otras novelas que gozaron de gran popularidad (i.e., 'Corazón') para difundir una nueva cultura que, tras la unificación italiana, trataba de reforzar el sentimiento de identidad colectiva y de plantear soluciones a los problemas de su país. Desde esta óptica, en segundo lugar, resumo los dilemas y mensajes sobre la EF que el autor pone en boca de los distintos protagonistas de la ficción. Entre ellos destacan los siguientes: a) La existencia de propagandistas de una nueva cultura corporal empeñados en persuadir a la sociedad de la necesidad de implantar la EF escolar con carácter obligatorio. b) La cristalización, fruto de dicha labor de apostolado, de instituciones y legislación específicas de EF (i.e., centros de formación). c) Los motivos recurrentes con los que se explica la razón de ser de la EF. Especial relevancia tiene, a este respecto, el asunto de la salud y/o degeneración de la raza visto desde la óptica de la riqueza o miseria de la nación. En esta tesitura, la EF tiene una doble naturaleza: medicina preventiva e intervención educativa. d) El discurso con el que los apóstoles de la nueva cultura se desmarcan de otros tipos de prácticas corporales: el carácter científico de una EF basada en la anatomía, la fisiología, la higiene, la pedagogía, la historia y la teoría de la gimnástica, el diseño de aparatos y gimnasios, etc. e) Los conflictos internos y discrepancias entre escuelas y/o corrientes de la EF.
