Charles Darwin en Granada: ...
On occasion of the second centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the author presents a debate, which took place in Granada in 1871. The subject matter is Science and Religion. The debate starts that year the Director of the Institute, Mr Rafael García Alvarez, gave the opening lecture glossing the figure of Charles Darwin and defending the Darwinism ideas. The speech was poorly received in the ecclesiastical circles then influenced by the recent declaration of the Syllabus and by the Decrees of the First Vatican Council. They censured and condemned publicly the speech as insulting and heretic. Some years later, in 1883, the same speaker Mr. García Alvarez not engaging in controversy, published a paper Estudio sobre el transformismo in which he declared the compatibility between Science and Religion
Con ocasión del bicentenario del nacimiento de Charles Darwin, se presenta el debate sobre Ciencia y Religión, suscitado en Granada en 1872. Ese año, el director del Instituto de Granada, D. Rafael García Álvarez, pronunció el discurso inaugural glosando la figura del naturalista Charles Darwin y defendiendo las ideas del darwinismo. El discurso fue mal recogido por los medios eclesiásticos que, muy influidos por la reciente proclamación del Syllabus y por los Decretos del Concilio Vaticano I, censuraron y condenaron públicamente el discurso como herético e injurioso a Dios. Años más tarde, en 1883, García Álvarez, sin entrar en polémica directa, publicó un documentado Estudio sobre el transformismo en el que afirmaba la compatibilidad entre las ideas de las ciencias y de la religión
