Se reconstruyen las discrepancias mostradas por Hans Blumenberg y Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggenann respecto del papel tan decisivo desempeñado por la filosofía cristiana de Agustín de Hipona, al menos según Étienne Gilson 40 años antes. Se pone de manifiesto su peculiar modo heurístico de concebir las relaciones entre las distintas formas de conocimiento y lenguaje, sin duda su gran aportación a la génesis de la espiritualidad occidental
