Contra os Gramáticos, de Se...
Annotated translation of the final section (M1. 270-320) of the treatiseAgainst the Grammarians, written by the pyrrhonian skeptical philosopher Sextus Empiricus (c. second century AD). In this passage, Sextus,discussing the duties of the grammatical expertise, after dealing with the technical part (M1. 97-247), and the so-called historical part (M1. 247-269), approach the part which deals with poets and writers. In his exposition we can find arguments from epicurean origin, those that affirm the uselessness and harmfulness of grammar and poetry, as well as skeptical ones, which demonstrate the incoherence and insubstantiality of the grammatical endeavor. The notes to the translation intend to point and widen important questions, to justify our translational choices and to draw parallels with other works by the author or the period
Tradução anotada da parte final (M 1. 270-320) do tratado Contra os Gramáticos, escrito pelo filósofo cético pirrônico Sexto Empírico (prov. séc. II a.C.). Na passagem traduzida, Sexto, depois de tratar da parte técnica (M 1. 169-247) e da parte dita histórica (M 1. 247-269), aborda a parte da gramática que trata de poetas e escritores. A exposição faz uso tanto de argumentos de influência epicurista, aqueles que afirmam a inutilidade e nocividade da gramática e da poesia, quanto de argumentos céticos, os que demonstram a incoerência e insubsistência do empreendimento gramatical. As notas à tradução buscam sublinhar e ampliar questões importantes, justificar escolhas tradutórias e traçar paralelos entre a passagem e outras obras do autor ou do período
