This article analyses the bodily experiences of Spanish men and women in order to broaden our understanding of the Spanish postwar. Drawing on the examples of war disability and rape, this research outlines the limits of the privilege which came along with being associated with the winning side in the Civil War, and questions the extent to which this affiliation functioned as a guarantor against the challenges of life under early Francoism. Within the context of generalised postwar hardship, important hierarchies and relative privileges emerged between men and women, and individuals from different social backgrounds. Men, for example, benefitted to a greater extent from 'victor privilege' than their female counterparts. Meanwhile, there were also significant hierarchies between men from different classes with different kinds of disabilities. For ordinary Spaniards, the postwar period can be considered a continuation of the war, though not one between combatants, but rather a struggle against unemployment and hunger, a growing colonisation of womens bodies, and the meagre or inexistent social benefits provided by the dictatorship
En este artículo, analizaremos las experiencias corporales de hombres y mujeres españoles para ampliar nuestra comprensión de la sociedad española durante la posguerra. Basado en casos concretos de violación y mutilación durante la guerra, el artículo perfila los límites del privilegio de pertenecer al bando vencedor de la Guerra Civil, cuestionando la medida en que esta afiliación funcionó como garante contra las vicisitudes de la vida bajo el primer franquismo. Dentro del contexto de miseria generalizada de la posguerra, destacamos importantes jerarquías y privilegios relativos entre hombres y mujeres, así como entre individuos de distintas clases y condiciones sociales. Nuestra investigación demuestra cómo la victoria franquista aportó privilegios más significativos para sus adherentes masculinos que femeninos. También existían jerarquías notables entre hombres de distintas clases, con distintos tipos de discapacidad. Concluimos que, para la mayoría de los españoles, la posguerra se puede considerar una continuación de la guerra: no entre combatientes, sino contra el paro, el hambre, la creciente colonización de los cuerpos femeninos y los exiguos o inexistentes apoyos económicos proporcionados por la dictadura
