L'articolo documenta l'interesse di Tommaseo per l'umorismo popolare, per gli usi ironici e parodici nelle parlate toscane e, più in generale, per le potenzialità espressive della lingua italiana. La sensibilità per la 'lingua affettiva' emerge fin dai suoi primi studi lessicografici. Ne recano traccia le postille autografe che corredano la sua copia della cosiddetta Crusca veronese, di cui si presenta qui un campione rappresentativo. Ogni singola annotazione vergata da Tommaseo sui foglietti del primo volume del vocabolario è stata da me trascritta, ricondotta al lemma di riferimento nella Crusca e confrontata con le altre opere, lessicografiche e non, dello studioso. All'interno di questo corpus, che consta di oltre mille postille, ho isolato e riprodotto in quest'articolo alcune annotazioni di Tommaseo contenenti usi popolari e umoristici della lingua come traslati, espressioni eufemistiche e proverbi. La lingua popolare è stata, com'è noto, uno dei campi d'indagine privilegiati dallo studioso, come testimonia soprattutto l'edizione dei Canti popolari. In postille come Bariglione donna berta e grossa, Bell'e ito - Bell'e morto _ ironico e vergine come l'acqua de' maccheroni Tommaseo ha inteso registrare proprio le sfumature umoristiche e ironiche del toscano popolare che andava raccogliendo nel corso delle sue 'interrogazioni'. Lo spoglio linguistico della Crusca è stato per Tommaseo una tappa fondamentale per l'elaborazione dei Sinonimi e del Tommaseo-Bellini. Lo confermano da un lato l'elevato numero di postille recanti un sinonimo del lemma di riferimento, dall'altro il riuso pressoché costante del materiale annotato. Se ne può concludere che l'umorismo popolare è stato per Tommaseo un oggetto di studio precoce ma destinato ad attraversare tutta la sua attività di lessicografo
The paper shows Tommaseo's interest in popular humour, in the ironic and parodic usage of Tuscan parlances, and, more generally, in the expressive potentialities of the Italian language. His sensitivity to the "lingua affettiva" emerges right from his early lexicographical studies, as the original notes made about what is known as the Crusca veronese, which are presented here, illustrate. This research consisted of copying every single note handwritten by Tommaseo on the first volume of the dictionary, tracing each note back to his Crusca reference word and comparing each note with Tommaseo's other lexicographic and non-lexicographic works. From within this corpus of more than one thousand notes, the most significant ones regarding some popular and humorous linguistic uses were selected, such as tropes, euphemisms, and proverbs. Popular language was one of Tommaseo's main fields of investigation, as witnessed by the Canti Popolari edition. In notes such as Bariglione donna berta e grossa, Bell'e ito - Bell'e morto _ ironico, and vergine come l'acqua de' maccheroni Tommaseo revealed the humorous and ironic shades of the popular Tuscan he observed during his "interrogazioni". For Tommaseo the linguistic analysis of the Crusca was an important step towards the composition of the Sinonimi and Tommaseo-Bellini. This is confirmed, on the one hand, by the large number of notes with a reference word synonym and, on the other hand, by the continuous re-use of the annotated materials. It can be concluded that popular humour was an early subject of investigation for Tommaseo, being destined to continue throughout his activity as a lexicographer
