The purpose of this paper is to analyze mobile usage by the Shuar people of the Ecuadorian Amazon as a tool to strengthen their sense of community. Mobile phones remediate attitudes, values and previous speeches (Bolter and Grusin, 2000). The Shuar people have survived the Inca and Spanish invasions by their warrior spirit, pivoted on a strong community feeling. Today, acculturation threat to this ethnic group, which looks for new tools to defend their traditions and idiosyncrasies. In this context, the mobile provides support for translate their worldviews to digital language. The methodology, conducted between March and July 2014, is qualitative. Combines participant observation, semi-structured questionnaires, interviews and dynamic ad hoc. The results indicate the main strategies for community use of cell phone by this indigenous community
El propósito de este artículo es analizar el uso del móvil, en los shuar de la Amazonía ecuatoriana, como instrumento para reforzar su sentimiento comunitario. Los teléfonos móviles tienen la función de remediar actitudes, valores y discursos anteriores (Bolter y Grusin, 2000). El pueblo shuar ha sobrevivido a las invasiones incas y españolas por su carácter guerrero, pivotado sobre un firme sentimiento comunitario. Hoy en día, la aculturación amenaza a esta etnia, que busca nuevas herramientas para defender sus tradiciones e idiosincracia. En este contexto, el móvil sirve de soporte para traducir sus cosmovisiones al lenguaje digital. La metodología empleada, realizada entre marzo y julio de 2014, es de corte cualitativo, combina observación participante, cuestionarios semi-estructurados, entrevistas en profundidad y dinámicas ad hoc. Los resultados apuntan las principales estrategias de usos comunitarios de las telefonía móvil por parte de esta comunidad indígena
