"Cantáridas Mexicanas": una fuente para la historia de la medicina natural

Abstract: This paper analyzes an anonymous, unpublished manuscript that sheds light on a relatively unknown chapter in the history of 19th-century medicine: Mexican scientists' search for a cheaper and more effective native substitute for imported cantharides, species of insects that have medicinal properties. This scientific enterprise is situated in its historical context, where local knowledge, contemporary medicine and imperial politics converged to fuel an international competition to procure American species for the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, the study reveals the identity of the author of that anonymous study, a humble country doctor whose writings inspired this research

Resumen: En este artículo se presenta un manuscrito, anónimo e inédito, para historiar la búsqueda, emprendida por científicos mexicanos a mediados del siglo XIX, de un substituto nativo más eficaz y económico a la cantárida importada, un insecto con propiedades curativas. Se ubica a esta empresa científica en un contexto histórico donde la intersección de los saberes locales, la medicina decimonónica y las políticas imperiales revela una competencia internacional por especies nativas de América. Finalmente, damos a conocer la identidad del autor del mencionado estudio anónimo que dio pie a esta investigación
