R.K. Narayan's novels have had a lukewarm reception in the West, not for lack of literary value, but because they have not been fully understood. In the present literary scenario, the upsurge of Indian writers enhances the literature produced in English due to its exquisite use of the English language and its literary quality. It is now, therefore, the right time to revisit the literature written by its predecessors, at a time when the exoticism of the Oriental matter was in vogue in English literature through the mesmerizing and marvellous descriptions of writers such as Foster or Kipling, who offered a biased image of the reality of India. Narayan's representation of India in English amalgamates content and form within a kind of inclusive realism that embraces the fantastic and finds its expression in simple English structures that shape the Indian realism of his novels
La obra de R.K. Narayan ha tenido una tibia recepción en Occidente, no porque su obra carezca de virtudes literarias sino porque no ha sido comprendida en su totalidad. En este momento de auge de escritores indios, que están dando un giro a la literatura en lengua inglesa por su exquisito uso de la lengua inglesa y su calidad literaria, es oportuno reivindicar la literatura escrita por sus antecesores en un momento en que el exotismo del tema oriental estaba en boga en la literatura en lengua inglesa por las descripciones hipnóticas y maravillosas de escritores como Foster, que al igual que Kipling, tamizan la realidad india por el filtro occidental. De la mano de Narayan descubrimos la realidad de un tipo de literatura india que se expresa en inglés y que amalgama el contenido y la forma en un realismo inclusivo que no desprecia lo fantástico y que se expresa en un inglés de estructuras sencillas que canalizan a la perfección el realismo indio de sus novelas
