This article studies the cliché according to which the Portuguese "are unable to govern themselves and refuse to be governed", via the appearance of the phrase in blogs and online press, as well as some medieval antecedents of this idea. Various interpretations arising from the polysemy of the notion are identified, and its durability is analysed(especially in times of crisis). It is further emphasized that it is possible to find auto and hetero-images of the Portuguese since very early times
Artigo que estuda o cliché que considera que os portugueses "não se governam, nem se deixam governar", tendo em conta a fortuna desta frase em blogues e na imprensa online, bem como alguns antecedentes medievais desta ideia. São identificadas várias interpretações decorrentes da polissemia da noção, e a sua perenidade é analisada (especialmente em momentos de crise). É ainda sublinhado o facto de ser possível encontrar auto e hetero-imagens dos Portugueses desde tempos bastante remotos
