Despite their strict contemporaneity, their probable common historic sources and plot similarities, John Dryden's The Indian Emperour (1667) and Fernando de Zárates La Conquista de México (1668) theatrical plays convey two divergent visions of the American indigenous universe. In accordance with the theory of textual semantics, this work proposes to construct the pertinent evaluations related to the indigenous actors in these pieces and establish the narrative truth of some problematic enunciates, in order to suggest an alternative reading of Zárate's work in relation to the teatro indiano
A pesar de su estricta contemporaneidad, sus probables fuentes cronísticas comunes y sus similitudes argumentales, The Indian Emperour (1667) del inglés John Dryden y La Conquista de México (1668) del español Fernando de Zárate presentan dos visiones divergentes del universo indígena americano. Apoyándose en el aparato teórico-metodológico de la semántica textual, este trabajo se propone construir las evaluaciones relativas a los actores indígenas de ambas piezas y establecer el valor de verdad de los enunciados problemáticos, dando así lugar a una interpretación a menudo divergente de las propuestas anteriormente por la crítica respecto de la pieza de Zárate y del llamado teatro indiano
