''Una perniciosa costumbre'...
This article discusses the problem of wet nurses in Portugal in the eigh- teenth century. In addition to those who were hired by the city to work in charities administrations were many women throughout the eighteenth century played the practice of salaried breastfeeding within urban fam- ilies belonging to the working class. Despite the limited information that exists on this last group of -due to the absence to contractual relations workers, I have tried to provide some notes socio-economic character on them. However, the bulk of the study focuses on drawing the so- cial image of these women constructed from doctors, memorialists and literary discourses (cordel); a nefarious image was projected through different means and instruments of expression (such as work of popular theater or medial treatises). Focus on the speeches about wet nurses is to assume the importance of the process of objectification of their bodies, that is, its conversion into an object of theoretical discussion, instrument or vehicle by which to argue, justify, defend and develop new models in the social body
Este artículo aborda la problemática de las nodrizas en Portugal en el siglo XVIII. Además de aquellas que eran contratadas por las administraciones municipales para trabajar en las instituciones de beneficencia, fueron muchas las mujeres que a lo largo del siglo XVIII desempeñaron la práctica de la lactancia asalariada en el seno de familias urbanas pertenecientes a la clase obrera. A pesar de la escasa información que existe sobre este último colectivo de trabajadoras -debido a la ausencia de relaciones contractuales-, he tratado de aportar algunos apuntes de carácter socio-económico sobre las mismas. No obstante, el grueso del estudio se centra en dibujar la imagen social de estas mujeres construida a partir de los discursos médicos, memorialistas y literarios (literatura de cordel); una imagen nefasta que se proyectó a través de distintos medios e instrumentos de expresión (tales como obras de teatro popular o tratados médicos). Centrarse en los discursos sobre el ama de leche supone asumir la importancia del proceso de objetivación de sus cuerpos, esto es, su conversión en objeto de discusión teórica, en instrumento o vehículo mediante el cual argumentar, justificar, defender y elaborar nuevos modelos en el cuerpo social
