Human rights education and citizenship education constitutes the main goal of the curricular unit of Human Rights and Education, inserted in the 1st year of the Degree in Social Education taught at the Higher School of Education and Social Sciences (ESECS) of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal. It aims to promote knowledge of what human rights are, their meaning, their inherent values and principles, the main legal instruments that proclaim and protect them, as well as their importance and focus on generic and specific contexts, mainly: educational and social contexts. It is intended to contribute to the education of responsible, autonomous, solidary citizens, who know and exercise their rights and duties, in dialogue and respect for others. In this text, it is intended to discuss theory and praxis in the teaching of the curricular unit of Human Rights and Education, with special focus on the respective teaching-learning process. Educar para os direitos humanos e para a cidadania constitui o propósito central da unidade curricular de Direitos Humanos e Educação, inserida no 1.º ano da Licenciatura em Educação Social da Escola Superior de Educação e Ciências Sociais (ESECS) do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Portugal. Pretende-se promover o conhecimento do que são os direitos humanos, do seu significado, dos valores e princípios enformadores, dos principais instrumentos jurídicos que os proclamam e protegem, bem como da sua importância e incidência em contextos genéricos e específicos, neste particular: contextos educativos e sociais. Visa-se contribuir para a formação de pessoas responsáveis, autónomas, solidárias, que conhecem e exercem os seus direitos e deveres, em diálogo e no respeito pelos outros. Pretende-se, neste texto, discorrer sobre a teoria e a práxis na lecionação da unidade curricular de Direitos Humanos e Educação, com especial enfoque no respetivo processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Educar para los derechos humanos y para la ciudadanía constituye el propósito central de la unidad curricular de Derechos Humanos y Educación, insertada en el 1er año de la Licenciatura en Educación Social de la Escuela Superior de Educación y Ciencias Sociales (ESECS) del Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Portugal. Se pretende promover el conocimiento de lo que son los derechos humanos, de su significado, de los valores y principios rectores, de los principales instrumentos jurídicos que los proclaman y protegen, así como su importancia e incidencia en contextos genéricos y específicos, en este particular: contextos educativos y sociales. Se mira a contribuir a la formación de personas responsables, autónomas, solidarias, que conocen y ejercen sus derechos y deberes, en diálogo y respeto a los demás.
