At 92 years old, he continues to work every day. He enjoys strolling and exploring what, for him, is his workshop: the immense forest surrounding his home in the small German town of Eschenau, in the Steigerwald Nature Park. There, he finds branches, roots, soil, humus, leaves, and other materials with which he creates his artwork. According to him, art has the function of (re)connecting us with nature to delve into the spiritual essence of life. He praises the infinite variety of forms and expressions of life, the uniqueness of each being, and advocates for the equality and unity of all living beings. In rejection of hierarchy, he always writes his name in lowercase. In 2015, he represented the Dutch pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale, and in 2017, MUSAC dedicated a major retrospective to him. He trained as a horticulturist, worked as a biologist, and his work focuses on the processes of natural phenomena. He uses the scientific method of observation, collection, and classification, seeking objectivity and avoiding intervention as much as possible. A great traveler, fascinated by Eastern cultures and influenced by Buddhism, Taoism, and Zen, he aims to awaken humanity's consciousness and build bridges between modern man and nature with his art. For this interview, he welcomed us into his home with his wife Susanne, opened his studio full of creative experiments, his library filled with books, and his deeply authentic heart
A sus 92 años sigue trabajando todos los días. Disfruta paseando y explorando lo que para él es su taller: el inmenso bosque que rodea su casa en la pequeña localidad alemana de Eschenau, en el Parque Natural de Steigerwald. Allí encuentra ramas, raíces, tierra, humus, hojas y otros materiales con los que crea su obra. El arte, según él, tiene la función de (re)conectarnos con la naturaleza para penetrar en la esencia espiritual de la vida. Alaba la infinita variedad de formas y expresiones de la vida, la singularidad de cada ser y defiende la igualdad y unidad de todos los seres vivos. Por rechazo a la jerarquía escribe siempre su nombre con minúsculas. En 2015 representó al pabellón holandés en la Bienal de Arte de Venecia y en 2017 el MUSAC le dedicó una gran retrospectiva. Se formó como horticultor, trabajó como biólogo y su obra se centra en los procesos de los fenómenos naturales. Utiliza el método científico de observación, recolección y clasificación, buscando la objetividad y evitando en lo posible la intervención. Gran viajero, fascinado por las culturas orientales e influenciado por el budismo, el taoísmo y el zen, busca con su arte despertar la conciencia de la humanidad y tender puentes entre el hombre moderno y la naturaleza. Para esta entrevista, nos recibió en su casa con su esposa Susanne, nos abrió su estudio lleno de experimentos creativos, su librería repleta de libros y su corazón profundamente auténtico
