The Experience of Cultural ...
Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) has a very prominent place in the history of women's travel literature, because travelling, writing and publishing meant challenging the division of gender roles of the time, which reserved these activities only for men. In this paper I briefly present the five journeys of this woman from Vienna who, with few resources, managed to visit far-flung enclaves in Europe, Asia, America and Africa and to publish a travel book on each of her travels. However, the main objective of this work is to analyse her first publication, Visit to the Holy Land. For this analysis I will consider, on the one hand, the importance of pilgrimages in the history of travel and, on the other, the experience of cultural otherness that the East represents for 19th century Europe
Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) tiene un lugar muy destacado en la historia de la literatura de viajes de mujeres, porque viajar, escribir y publicar suponía desafiar la división de roles de la época, que reservaba estas actividades solo para los hombres. En este trabajo presentamos brevemente los cinco viajes de esta vienesa que, con pocos recursos, consiguió visitar enclaves lejanos de Europa, Asia, América y África y publicar un libro de viaje de cada uno de sus periplos. No obstante, el objetivo principal del trabajo es abordar el contenido de su primera publicación Reise einer Wienerin in das heilige Land teniendo en cuenta, por una parte, la importancia de las peregrinaciones en la historia de los viajes y por otra, la experiencia de la alteridad cultural que supone Oriente para la Europa del siglo XIX
