Alfonso XIII's pledge of allegence to the Constitution took place on his sixteenth birthday, 17 May 1902, a very turbulent time for the country both politically and socially, over and above the recent colonial losses. The satirical magazines in the capital made few references to it, but were mainly critical of the politicians in power and made jokes with local humour. For their part, in Catalonia, these media mocked the Alphonsine monarchy and its celebrations, but they were also a pretext for caricaturing both the politicians and the Restoration regime itself. One of the main questions asked was what Spain had to celebrate given the difficult situation in which it found itself, and the ceremony seemed to be an attempt to cover up the reality of the country with rockets and pennants
La Jura de la Constitución de Alfonso XIII se produjo con su decimosexto cumpleaños, el 17 de mayo de 1902, un momento muy convulso para el país a nivel tanto político como social, más allá de las recientes pérdidas coloniales. Las revistas satíricas de la capital hicieron escasas referencias al hecho, sobre todo fueron críticas con los políticos de turno e hicieron bromas de humor costumbrista. Por su parte, en Cataluña, estos medios se burlaron de la monarquía alfonsina y sus celebraciones, pero también estas fueron un pretexto para caricaturizar tanto a los políticos como al propio régimen de la Restauración. Una de las cuestiones principales que se preguntaban era que tenía que celebrar España dada la difícil situación en la que se encontraba, pareciendo esta ceremonia un intento por tapar con cohetes y banderines la realidad del país
