Various studies have pointed out the important role played by the Spanish monarchy in the construction of the Church of St. Peter, the first Catholic Church in New York. But the Spanish support for the establishment of Catholicism in North America went beyond the construction of a parish church. This article intends to point out the importance that Spain had in this process thanks to the presence of its diplomats on North American soil, the ceding of consular spaces, a chaplain at the service of the English-speaking parishioners, the support provided in the construction of the first parish and the support given to the institution of the Catholic hierarchy in the United States
Diversos estudios han señalado el importante papel jugado por la monarquía española en la construcción de la iglesia de San Pedro, el primer templo católico de Nueva York. Pero el apoyo español a la implantación del catolicismo en Norteamérica fue más allá de la construcción de una parroquia. Con este artículo se pretende señalar la importancia que España tuvo en este proceso gracias a la presencia de sus diplomáticos en suelo norteamericano, a la cesión de los espacios consulares y de un capellán católico que también se puso al servicio de la feligresía angloparlante, al apoyo prestado en la construcción de la primera parroquia y al respaldo otorgado para el establecimiento de la jerarquía eclesiástica en los nacientes Estados Unidos
