"Atroces armas de fuego de antaño", Remingtons letales: heterogeneidad y poder de fuego en el armamento de la frontera oeste de Buenos Aires, 1869-1877

This paper deals with firearms that were employed by the Argentine army in frontier warfare between 1869 and 1877. Documentary information and archaeological assemblages from two contemporary military frontier facilities -Fort General Paz and Fortín Algarrobos- are combined to characterize the armament in service during those years. This was a crucial period, during which a process of modernization and standardization of the army's weaponry started, centered on the incorporation of Remington single-shot breech-loading rifles and carbines. However, the archaeological record shows that this process was slow and that an astonishing variety of older firearms (flintlocks, percussion smoothbores and rifles) remained in service, causing logistic and operative problems. The paper then discusses the impact of the incorporation of the Remington guns on frontier warfare, critiquing commonly held determinist characterizations, and placing the Remington's effect into a broader political and economic context

Este trabajo aborda la cuestión de las armas de fuego empleadas por el ejército argentino en la guerra de frontera entre 1869 y 1877. Se combina la información documental y los conjuntos arqueológicos de dos instalaciones militares contemporáneas -Fuerte General Paz y Fortín Algarrobos- para caracterizar el armamento en servicio durante ese lapso. Este fue un período crucial, durante el cual comenzó un proceso de modernización y estandarización del armamento del ejército, centrado en torno a la incorporación de fusiles y carabinas monotiro de retrocarga de la familia Remington Rolling Block. Sin embargo, el registro arqueológico muestra que este proceso fue lento y que una sorprendente variedad de armas de fuego más antiguas (fusiles y carabinas de avancarga de sistema de disparo de percusión y posiblemente también de chispa) permanecieron en servicio, causando problemas logísticos y operativos. El trabajo discute también el impacto de la incorporación de los Remington en la guerra de frontera, criticando nociones deterministas muy difundidas y situando su efecto en un contexto político y económico más amplio.
