The canvas is devoted to the study of the respiratory system focusing on neurovascular anatomy. The upper portion of the canvas is dominated by a splendid figure of a woman (95 cm tall) whose skull has been cut away, revealing the cerebral falx and a horizontal cross-section of the lateral ventricles. On the right side of the figure, skin covers her face and body, and she exhales air which forms white vapour clouds to her right and along the length of her body. The left half of the body, dissected, reveals the trachea, the large vessels at the base of the heart, lungs, stomach, intestine, uterus, vascular system and blood vessels. The lower portion of the canvas has ten smaller figures: a tracheobronchial tree with the aorta and portion of the bronchial artery; the larynx seen from different angles; the cerebral falx surrounded by the superior sagittal sinus and lateral sinus; a coronal section of the brain; the right and left cerebral hemispheres; and, the posterior surface of the brain stem
