The article identifies four key factors to consider when making an iconographic analysis of ornamental Marinids zillij of al-Attarin Madrasa of Fez. Assuming they do not currently have primary sources that directly indicate the artistic motivations, nor the technical and / or symbolic reasons behind the design of geometric patterns, are proposed as a basis for analyzing the context in which it arises the masterpiece. Topics are focused on the historical and political context of the Merinid Dynasty, such as jihad in the Iberian Peninsula, the rise of this dynasty to power and the need for legitimacy. As well as the institution of the madrasa, its emergence and adaptation in the Maghreb and the Quranic texts epigraphic bands accompanying zillij geometry
El artículo señala cuatro factores clave a considerar a la hora de realizar un análisis iconográfico de los zillij merinidas ornamentales de la madrasa al-Attarin de Fez. Partiendo de la base de que no se cuentan actualmente con fuentes primarias que señalen directamente las motivaciones artísticas, así como tampoco las técnicas y/o motivos simbólicos tras el diseño de los patrones geométricos, se proponen como base de análisis el contexto dentro del cual surge la obra de arte. Los temas se centran en el contexto histórico y político de la Dinastía Merinida, tales como el yihad en la Península Ibérica, el surgimiento de esta dinastía al poder y la necesidad de legitimarse.
