Th e objective of this study is to analyze the intellectual biography of the Chilean Positivist Valentín Letelier, who, from 1870 to 1919, produced a prolifi c body of work ranging from concerns about the administrative problems of the State to theoretical questions regarding the development of the Human Sciences. Our hypothesis is that Letelier, inspired by the Positivism of Comte, Spencer y Mill, refl ected deeply, through an inductive method, in the hopes of transforming the social knowledge of the formal Human Sciences and thus elevate society and its (social, political, and juridical) relations to a "scientifi c" or "positivist" level. Th is perspective allows us to observe the disciplinary and scientifi c evolution of this body of knowledge and understand how Positivism came to replace Enlightenment thinking on the academic and intellectual stage in Latin America in the second half of the 19th century
El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la biografía intelectual del positivista chileno Valentín Letelier, quien entre 1870 y 1919 desarrolló una amplia obra que abarcó desde la preocupación por los problemas administrativos del Estado, hasta temas teóricos acerca del desarrollo de las ciencias humanas. Nuestra hipótesis es que Letelier, inspirado en el positivismo de Comte, Spencer y Mill, desarrolló una larga refl exión para, mediante un método inductivo, transformar el conocimiento social en ciencias humanas formales y así llevar a la sociedad y sus relaciones (sociales, políticas, jurídicas) a una etapa "científi ca" o "positiva". Esta trayectoria nos permite conocer la evolución disciplinaria y científi ca de estos conocimientos y comprender como el positivismo reemplazó en el escenario académico e intelectual al pensamiento ilustrado en América Latina durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX
