Introduction. This paper gathers elements that lead to understanding of how the questions, categories, ways of thinking and values of people who have Chagas disease, resident in urban areas from Argentina, intervene as part of the phenomenon "urbanization of Chagas disease". Objective. To evaluate the conceptions on Chagas of people with positive Chagas serology, who reside in the Metropolitan area of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and to evaluate the impact in their daily lives of such conceptions and of the "chagasic" condition itself Materials and methods. We used a qualitative approach and tried to understand, by means of semi-structured interviews, the perception of their situation and their thoughts in terms of the healthdisease interaction process. Results. We identified conceptions and practices that these individuals create in order to face this particular problem; also identifying the perception they have of their condition and how this affects the development of their daily life. Their speeches are crossed by dimensions linked with certain fears and also with the naturalization of the problem generally accompanied by an attitude of resignation faced with the inevitable. Conclusions. We consider the survey as an important input coming directly from people affected by Chagas, since they provide the basis for developing didactic resources and strategies aimed at placing the problem in public agendas, optimizing the therapeutic communication and promoting the analysis of this problem in spaces of formal and non formal education
Introducción. En el marco del fenómeno de "urbanización de la enfermedad de Chagas", intentamos reunir elementos para comenzar a entender cómo los cuestionamientos, categorías, modos de pensar y valores de las personas que tienen Chagas y viven en zonas urbanas intervienen en la comprensión del problema. Objetivo. Conocer el universo de concepciones asociadas con el tema, en personas que cursan las distintas fases del Chagas y residen en la región de La Plata (Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina), y analizar las repercusiones de las concepciones y de su condición de "chagásicos" en la vida de estos individuos. Materiales y Métodos. Empleamos un abordaje metodológico cualitativo y, a través de la realización de entrevistas semiestructuradas, buscamos comprender de qué manera quienes tienen Chagas perciben su estado y le dan un sentido en términos del proceso de salud-enfermedad. Resultados. Identificamos concepciones y prácticas que estos individuos producen y reproducen frente a la problemática; la percepción que tienen de su situación y en qué medida ésta afecta el desarrollo de su vida cotidiana. Sus discursos están atravesados por dimensiones vinculadas con ciertos miedos y, también, con la naturalización del problema, acompañada generalmente de una actitud de resignación frente a lo inevitable Conclusiones. Consideramos fundamental el aporte que brindan con sus testimonios quienes están afectados por el Chagas, dado que con base en el material empírico recabado será posible elaborar estrategias y recursos didácticos destinados a instalar el tema en las agendas públicas, optimizar la comunicación terapéutica y fomentar el abordaje de esta problemática en espacios de educación formal y no formal
