The "disaster" at the Andal...
Through the examination of various local but far-reaching Sevillian periodicals and other contemporaries printed sources, this article focuses on the role played by the press in shaping public opinion on the verge of the loss of last Spanish colonies. It first analyses how the Andalusian common people, the one truly affected by the war, perceived these events through the press, which was the only available media to be informed about what was happening on the other side of the ocean. And, secondly, it aims to discern whether the newspapers limited themselves to report news or, in a time when the free press offered a unique opportunity for the public opinion to express itself through its pages, the different social, political and economic groups involved tried to shape a particular view about this topic
A través del examen de varias publicaciones periódicas editadas en Sevilla, aunque no de ámbito local, y de algunas otras fuentes impresas de la época, este trabajo pretende reflejar el papel que jugó la prensa como creadora de opinión ante la pérdida de las últimas colonias. Se trata, por una parte, de analizar la visión que la población andaluza de a pie, la realmente afectada por la guerra, tuvo de aquel proceso a través de los diarios, que eran el único medio que tenía para estar al tanto de lo que estaba sucediendo al otro lado del mar. Y por otra, de constatar si los periódicos se limitaron a transmitir noticias o si, en una época en que la libertad de prensa ofreció una oportunidad única a la opinión pública para expresarse a través de sus páginas, los distintos grupos sociales, políticos y económicos que dominaban esos medios trataron de crear opinión al respecto
