As máscaras do passado
The present study establishes the importance of the presence of History in literary texts from the Middle Ages to the present day. Starting with a study of the absence of historical sense and the inevitable anachronism which results from it, the paper then analyses the changes which take place in the 19th century, thus allowing an understanding of the subversion and transgression which are to be found from the end of the 1970s onwards. In post-modernist novels the importance of the mask and the double are emphasized in the treatment of concrete facts, as are the biography and the (fictitious) autobiography of characters from the past, the confusion and the invention of times, memory and the conceptual meaning itself of events and attitudes
O presente ensaio estabelece a importância da presença da História nos textos literários, desde a Idade Média até ao presente. Começando por estudar a ausência de sentido histórico e a inevitável anacronia daí decorrente, debruça-se em seguida sobre as mudanças operadas no século XIX, a fim de melhor se poderem compreender a subversão e transgressão que se verificam a partir do fim dos anos 70 de novecentos. Nos romances pós-modernos, acentua-se a importância da máscara e do duplo, no tratamento que sofrem os factos concretos, a biografia e autobiografia (fictícia) de personagens do passado, a confusão e invenção dos tempos, a memória e o próprio significado conceptual de acontecimentos e atitudes
