The new ideals of the Habsburg monarchy incardinated themselves in the Classical past in order to legitimate the new Empire. This included the representation of both antique Caesars as well as mythological gods in statues, busts and fountains. Since the 16th century onwards, many of these were constantly moved, either inside the very same garden, to other ones, or even getting to disappear completely form them. In September 2013, due to the undertaking of the landscape restoration projects initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAGRAMA) in various of is headquarters, a sculpture of Hercules leaning on its club, with the skin of the Nemean lion draped over it, was identified at one of their gardens. This article tells the deeds and doings of this statue, as well as the historical happenings it was witness to
Los nuevos ideales de la monarquía de los Austrias se encarnaron en el pasado clásico a fin de legitimar la procedencia del nuevo Imperio. Éste incluía tanto a antiguos césares así como a dioses mitológicos que quedarían plasmados en estatuas, bustos y fuentes que desde el siglo XVI en adelante se trasladarán continuamente, ya fuese dentro del propio jardín, moviéndose a otros o llegando incluso a desaparecer completamente al cabo de los siglos. En septiembre de 2013, con motivo de la realización de los proyectos de recuperación paisajística de los jardines propiedad del Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente (MAGRAMA), se identificó en una de sus sedes una escultura de un Hércules apoyado en su maza cubierta con la piel del león de Nemea. Este artículo relata las vicisitudes sufridas por esta estatua, así como los acontecimientos históricos de los que fue testigo
