Antibiotics have saved millions of lives around the world, yet today the world is experiencing unprecedented rates of resistance to some of the most common treatments. In this regard, it is vital that efforts are intensified to preserve these gains, reduce the impact of resistance, and ensure continued prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Consequently, this review aims to capture the main strategies or recommendations for the inappropriate use of antibiotics, especially in clinical practice. The research was developed using a bibliographic documentary type methodology under the review modality. Among the main strategies or rec-ommendations to avoid this inappropriate use are, from general to specific, the Global Action Plan on antimi-crobial resistance, agreed by the WHO World Health Assembly in May 2015. Likewise, from this plan, in each partner country, national action plans have been established. In this global and national framework, Antibiotic Use Optimization Programs arise, to be established in hospitals, clinics and primary care. It is important to highlight that all these actions are new and many are in the implementation stage, therefore, there is still a long way to go, therefore the need for not only generating guidelines for the treatment of various infectious pathol-ogies is evident. , but even more, to make such guides comply. Likewise, it is necessary that these plans and programs for the supervision and control of the use of antibiotics are sustainable over time and globally
RESUMEN Los antibióticos han permitido salvar millones de vidas en todo el mundo, sin embargo, en la actualidad, el mundo experimenta tasas de resistencia sin precedentes a algunos de los tratamientos más comunes. En este sentido, es vital que se intensifiquen los esfuerzos para preservar estos logros, reducir el impacto de la resistencia y asegurar que haya prevención y tratamientos continuos de las enfermedades infecciosas. En consecuencia, la presente revisión tiene como objetivo plasmar las principales estrategias o recomen-daciones ante el uso inapropiado de antibióticos, especialmente en la práctica clínica. La investigación se desarrolló mediante una metodología de tipo documental bibliográfica bajo la modalidad de revisión. Entre las principales estrategias o recomendaciones para evitar este uso inapropiado se encuentran, de lo general a lo específico, el Plan de Acción Mundial sobre la resistencia a los antimicrobianos, acordado por la Asamblea Mundial de la Salud de la OMS, en mayo de 2015. Asimismo, de este plan, en cada país aliado, se han esta-blecido planes de acción nacional. En este marco global y nacional surgen los Programas de Optimización de Uso de los Antibióticos, a instaurarse en hospitales, clínicas y atención primaria. Es importante resaltar, que todas estas acciones son novedosas y muchas se encuentran en etapa de implementación, por tanto, queda mucho camino por recorrer, por tanto se evidencia la necesidad de que no solo se generen las guías para el tratamiento de las diversas patologías infecciosas, sino más aún, hacer que tales guías se cumplan. Igualmente, es necesario que estos planes y programas de supervisión y control del uso de los antibióticos, sean sostenibles en el tiempo y de forma global
