The aim of this article consists in showing not only how the form of Borges's short story is related to the historical reality, but also how this literary text itself (conceived as an interpretation or an ideological argument) participates in a debate on Argentinean identity. Identity is, thus, a kind of a virtual text which can be reconstructed on the basis of social discourses, primarily the literary one. Borges was perceived as a creator of literary "irreality". This article (in accordance with the sociocritical theories) parts from the premise that the language as a social construct cannot be separated from the reality. Further, it analyzes multiple and sophisticated relations that connect this short story with history and literature as well as the texts participation in the social dialogue, achieved by chosen contemporary readings
El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar en qué forma un cuento de Borges no sólo se relaciona con la realidad histórica, sino de qué manera el texto mismo participa como interpretación o argumento ideológico en un debate histórico en torno a la identidad argentina. La identidad es entendida aquí como una especie de discurso virtual que puede ser reconstruido a partir de los diferentes discursos sociales, entre los cuales el literario tiene un lugar privilegiado. Borges muchas veces ha sido interpretado como un constructor consciente de la "irrealidad" literaria. Partiendo de la premisa de que el lenguaje es un medio social imposible de desligar de la "realidad", y teniendo como telón de fondo las teorías sociocríticas, se está mostrando la multiplicidad y la sofisticación de los vínculos de este pequeño texto de Borges con historia y literatura, y su participación en el diálogo social vivo a través de algunas lecturas contemporáneas
