The work tries to demonstrate that the historical novel of current importance that is published from middle of the 19th century answers to a political interest of diffusion of the national past. Considered in general terms the decline of the kind genre, these novels are first of all a book of history with the appearance of a sentimental statement destined for a public for the most part femininely and unculturedly. One of the most explicit examples is Mário, of Silva Gaio, whose edition has been kept without interruptions up to the current importance
El trabajo pretende demostrar que la novela histórica de actualidad que se publica desde mediados del siglo XIX responde a un interés político de difusión del pasado nacional. Consideradas en términos generales el declive del género, estas novelas son ante todo un libro de historia con la apariencia de un relato sentimental destinado a un público mayoritariamente femenino e iletrado. Uno de los ejemplos más explícitos es Mário, de A. Silva Gaio, cuya edición se ha mantenido sin interrupciones hasta la actualidad
