During the military dictatorship, one of the political and cultural currents that contested the regime and the dominant values of Brazilian society was known as the counterculture. In the anticommunist imaginary, it was seen as a ruse created by Soviet communism, which purpose would be corrupting the youth, destroying basic values and institutions of Western society. Durante a ditadura militar, uma das correntes político-culturais que contestaram o regime e os valores dominantes da sociedade brasileira foi a chamada contracultura. No imaginário anticomunista, era vista como uma artimanha criada pelo comunismo soviético, cuja finalidade seria corromper a juventude, destruir valores e instituições basilares da sociedade ocidental. Nesse sentido, alguns setores responsáveis pela repressão imbuíram-se do combate a certas práticas da contracultura.
