John Irving was the nephew of Washington Irving. In 1833 he and his uncle visited the Otoe and Pawnee villages along with a government treaty party under the leadership of Commissioner Henry L. Ellsworth. They witnessed the signing of a peace treaty and one of the last occurrences of the "Morning Star Sacrifice."
