The god of Socrates has once previously been translated, (by Thomas Taylor), but the Florida, and the Apologia or Defence, are now given in English for the first time. The able metrical version of Cupid and Psyche, first published in 1801 anonymously, is attributed to the pen of Hudson Gurney, Esq. The well-known poem of Psyche by Mrs. Tighe is adjoined, because of its appropriateness and merit. It was highly popular at the time of its first publication, went through several large editions, and was elaborately reviewed and praised in the Quarterly review of May, 1811." --Page ix Biographical introduction -- The metamorphoses, or, Golden ass of Apuleius -- The defence of Apuleius : a discourse on magic -- Apuleius on the god of Socrates -- The Florida of Apuleius -- Cupid and Psyche : a mythological tale from the Golden ass of Apuleius, rendered into English verse -- Psyche, or, The legend of love : a poem in six cantos / written in the Spesnerian stanza by Mrs. Henry Tighe Use copy.
